Why Anchored VWAP Matters in Index Futures

Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) is widely utilized by institutional participants to assess whether transactions occur at fair market value relative to total session turnover. While standard intraday VWAP resets automatically at midnight or the session open, Anchored VWAP (AVWAP) enables a trader to calculate the volume-weighted benchmark from any specific moment in time when market sentiment shifted.

In E-mini S&P 500 (ES) and Nasdaq 100 (NQ) futures, liquidity does not distribute evenly across the day. Discrete events—such as the cash open, major macroeconomic data releases, and overnight extremes—establish new pricing balance. Anchoring VWAP to these points measures whether buyers or sellers maintain aggregate control since that specific shift occurred.

Three Essential Anchor Points for the New York Session

1. The Cash Session Open (9:30 AM ET)

The primary execution anchor. It tracks the collective participation of equity market participants from the opening bell. A market holding above the 9:30 AM AVWAP indicates intraday buyer control; failure to reclaim it suggests aggressive distribution.

2. Significant Overnight Extremes

Anchoring to the London session high or low establishes the benchmark price of overnight positional participants. When price revisits this anchor during Regular Trading Hours (RTH), reaction clarity often provides reliable directional clues.

3. Scheduled Economic Releases (CPI, PPI, FOMC)

When government economic data or Federal Reserve announcements hit the tape at 8:30 AM ET or 2:00 PM ET, an immediate surge of institutional volume re-prices the asset. Anchoring to that exact minute allows you to observe who won the post-news auction.

Predefined Risk vs. Indicator Over-Reliance

No indicator guarantees a favorable outcome. In the BokaroTraderFx framework developed by Suraj Sharma, Anchored VWAP is never treated as a standalone trigger to buy or sell blindly on touch. Instead, it provides contextual confluence alongside:

  • Opening Range 15 (OR15) breakout acceptance or failure.
  • Volume Profile value areas (VAH, VAL, Point of Control).
  • Order flow absorption observed via Bookmap heatmaps.

Before entering any position, the invalidation level must be known and calculated with a position sizing tool like the Position Size Calculator or the Futures Tick Calculator to ensure capital preservation.
